Laboratory Accreditation
Like certification, accreditation is also a voluntary, third party-reviewed process. As part of accreditation, a laboratory’s quality management system is thoroughly evaluated on a regular basis to ensure continued technical competence and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 or ISO 15189. Laboratory accreditation can only be granted by an accreditation body, or AB. Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC) is the only accreditation body based in Pakistan which conducts assessments for testing and calibration labs as well as medical laboratories. Accreditation by PNAC grants the laboratories global recognition because PNAC has MRA with ILAC.
- ISO 15189:2012 | Dedicated to medical labs only
- ISO 17025:2007 | Applicable to all other testing and calibration labs

Benefits
Laboratories gain a great deal from a technically sound assessment and accreditation by an internationally recognized accreditation body. Here are some of those benefits:
- International recognition of the accredited laboratory’s competence as PNAC is a signatory to the mutual recognition arrangement of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
- A testimonial that designates the laboratory as qualified and competent to carry out the specific tests covered under the scope of accreditation.
- Improved performance by laboratory staff. Undergoing regular assessments enhances staff discipline and sense of professionalism.
- As per the current business norms, laboratory accreditation is becoming a requirement in business deals so it can provide an entry into new markets.
- For calibration laboratories, accreditation by an PNAC validates their crucial place in the unbroken chain of traceability to national and international measurement standards.
